At more and more emergency rooms, the slogan ought to be, "The doctor won't see you now"—or won't unless you first pony-up a fee of $100 dollars or more. The fees are meant to discourage non-emergency patients—people suffering from nothing worse, say, than a sore throat or a skinned knee—from taking up time and resources better reserved for the seriously sick.
